Rev. Dr. Mathew Hunter, Jr., DMin.
A native of Bessemer, Alabama, Reverend Hunter is the third of five children born to the Late Deacon Mathew Sr. and Bessie Hunter. Reverend Hunter is a graduate of Jess Lanier High School. He also is a graduate of Lawson State College of Bessemer (formerly known as Bessemer State Technical College). In 1982 Reverend Hunter married his High School sweetheart Debra Walker and they have two children, LaToya and Samuel.
In 1984, Reverend Hunter was called to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He attended Samford University and later transferred to Birmingham Easonian Bible College where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Pastoral Theology. In 2004, Reverend Hunter was called to First Baptist Church of West Ensley to become their pastor. He continued his studies in ministry at Birmingham Theological Seminary where he earned a Masters of Arts in Ministry degree.
After graduating from Birmingham Theological Seminary, Reverend Hunter enrolled in two other seminaries, Trinity Theological Seminary and Andersonville Theological Seminary. Reverend Hunter received a Doctor of Ministry degree in 2010 from Andersonville Theological Seminary, and in 2016 he received a Master of Divinity degree from Faith International University and is continuing to pursue his PhD at Trinity Theological Seminary.
Reverend Dr. Mathew Hunter is the Dean of the Peace Baptist District Congress of Christian Education, a certified instructor in the Jefferson County and Peace Baptist Districts, and a Certified Dean through the National Baptist Convention, USA Inc.
As pastor of First Baptist Church of West Ensley, his main focus is to help the members to grow in grace and in the knowledge of Jesus Christ.
Dr. Hunter and Sister Hunter are also the proud grandparents of five grandchildren.
